Partial contents Segment 1 The intertitles explain that a method of securing anatomical reduction without anaesthesia, manipulation, special apparatus or skilled assistance will be shown. The patient is shown being prepared for treatment in hospital. The patient's history is given by intertitles; he was hit by a lorry and has a crushed vertebra though the spinal cord is unharmed. A jacket is put on to the patient's torso and bandaged and plastered, the intertitles explaining how to fit it properly. The intertitles also explain how to make the patient comfortable. Time start: 00:00:00:00 Time end: 00:05:46:08 Length: 00:05:46:08
Segment 2 The intertitles explain the use of a sling for the patient's arms, and that an anaesthetic is not needed as the patient is in very little pain. Some of the plaster in the jacket is cut away to allow for the hips and shoulders. Time start: 00:05:46:08 Time end: 00:11:41:20 Length: 00:05:55:12
Segment 3 The application of the plaster jacket continues. When the jacket is dry, the patient is encouraged to move about and sit up. He is turned at regular intervals. The patient must conduct exercises for the spine three times a day. The patient is shown walking from the third week of treatment. X-rays of before and after treatment are shown. The intertitles explain the aftercare of the patient. Time start: 00:11:41:20 Time end: 00:17:27:15 Length: 00:05:45:20

Summary This film contains a demonstration of details of the reduction, fixation and eventual mobilisation of a case of crush fracture of the fourth lumbar vertebra without nerve injury. The method of moving the prone, male patient is demonstrated and a double layered stockinette vest is fitted. A web harness is put around the patients shoulders and they are suspended between two tables while the plaster jacket is applied. No anaesthesia is used. The patient is shown commencing exercises and we see an x-ray of the fracture before and after treatment. 3 segments.
